The ASTM A420 standard, issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), includes four grades of materials, namely WPL6, WPL9, WPL3, and WPL8. This standard is primarily used to set technical requirements for the manufacture, inspection, and use of carbon steel and low alloy steel fittings in low-temperature environments. It provides detailed specifications for the chemical composition, mechanical properties, impact properties, and test temperatures for low-temperature steel materials.
ASTM A420 WPL6 is currently the most commonly used low-temperature steel material in the market for butt-welded pipe fittings. It is an alloy steel that is resistant to low temperatures, formulated by adding a suitable amount of one or more alloying elements to ordinary carbon steel. ASTM A420 WPL6 material is used to manufacture both seamless and welded butt-weld fittings, and based on the shape and application characteristics of the butt-weld fittings, it can be categorized into various types including:
- Long radius and short radius elbows
- Equal and reducing tees
- Equal and reducing crosses
- Concentric and eccentric reducers
- Caps
- Stub ends
These fittings are suitable for use in low-temperature pressure pipelines and pressure vessels. The corresponding American standard for steel pipes is ASTM A333 GR6, which specifies seamless and welded steel pipe for low-temperature service.
